10-29-2005: Eric and Sherry Miltz of Cowboy UP BBQ
Rodney Gray of Pellet Envy
Ed and Diane Albert of Albert's Ash Kicking
Ken Johnson of Swine Tingling BBQ
Rob and Levi Russell of Outdoor Creations
Eric spearheaded the event of October 29, 2005 at Ft. Riely, KS for the 300th MP troops who are leaving in 3-4 weeks for Iraq. He was able to get all the meat,
side dishes, rubs, seasonings, sauces, deserts, drinks and money donated. There was enough left over to cover a meeting for the soldiers before their final
departure day.It was for over 300 soldiers and their family. All items were donated from area banks, merchants, friends and family members. All team members, not one with a dry eye, received a
standing ovation from the soldiers. Eric received the special Commander's/challenge coin.
05-21-2005: Twentynine Palms, CA. Temperatures were around 114 degrees, but the heat did not stop the enthusiasm. The base had projected a 15,000 plate requirement so it was going to take a lot of planning and people to make this happen. Del King came through with flying colors, recruiting volunteers from the California BBQ Association. With approximately 20 pits and around 50 volunteers, 13,000 pounds of meat was cooked! The base informed us afterward that the base went through 22,000 plates. The fun for the troops and family members started at 3:00 pm with dinner lines starting at 4:00 pm. There was fabulous entertainment with the festivities ending at 9:30 pm.
11-25-2004: Amarillo TX The Winter storm missed us by a few miles so we ended up with just a dusting of snow and temps in the 30's. The first fire was lit yesterday at 5:00 am and the first birds were out and delivered to the wife and family of a deployed US Army Staff Sergeant by 11 AM. We cooked all day, wrapped, packed, kept warm and delivered 128 turkeys. This Thanksgiving day morning the last turkey was delivered to a soldier in Sunray, Texas who is leaving tomorrow for Iraq. It is now nap time. Thanks to all. Pete
11-21-2004: What can one Olalla Smoker, two Klose Pits, two Lang 84, one FE100, six cooks and five assistant cooks do in 20 hours? Well in one case, we prepped, smoked and chopped 2,500 pounds of beef and mixed so much cole slaw that no one wants it any time soon. This was for the Operation BBQ Northwest “Welcome Home” from Iraq for the 4,000 plus members of the Fort Lewis Styrker Brigade and their families. Thanks to the Pacific Northwest Barbeque Association (PNWBA) and the generous time and effort of it’s members, the troops were treated to some of the best BBQ in the Northwest. Konrad Haskins, Teddybear BBQ.com and Operation BBQ Northwest coordinator, organized and ramrodded the event. He asked for help cooking, and we, the PNWBA, responded. If any of you have an opportunity to participate in one of these event, “The smile and thank you” from the troops (our kids age) and their families make the work and loss of sleep pale in comparison to the job and sacrifice that we ask of them.
